Accountability Questions

Dmitriy Zherebnenkov

How often it is that we hear a truth, agree with it at first glance, and then neglect to look into our own hearts. Many of you have shared that it’s been helpful to analyze your own life when specific questions are brought up during the sermon. With this in mind, the goal of this letter is to look at a few questions that touch on various parts of a Christian’s life. For there to be a purpose with these questions, you’re recommended to grade yourself on a scale of 1-10. A 1 means that all is bad and a 10 means you’ve reached perfection. Your answers will probably lie somewhere between these two extremes. Then look at those questions that have the lowest numbers—this is what you should perhaps give some attention. Be sure not to make this a legalistic and hypocritical self-affirming activity, but rather, it should be an instrument of grace and humility in your search for ever closer relations with God.

1. Is Christ real to me?

2. Can I generally be called a grateful (thankful) person?

3. Do I fight hypocrisy in my life (creating an impression of being better than I am?)

4. Do I let the Bible speak to me every day?

5. Do I enjoy praying?

6. Have I been using my money as a faithful steward?

7. Am I currently working on specific things in my character?

8. Do I memorize Scripture?

9. Do I fight impure thoughts, irritation, resentment, or criticism of others?

10. Do I forgive those who offend, disrespect, or insult me?

11. Do I serve the Body of Christ, the Church (about 10 hours a week)?

12. Do I love and pursue fellowship with other believers?

13. Do I struggle with pride?

14. Do I distance myself from gossip (don’t gossip myself and stop others)?

15. Do I fight laziness?

16. Am I accountable to anyone?

17. Am I free from slavery to dress, friends, work, or habits?

18. Do I share about my faith with others?

19. Do I give to God what belongs to Him (tithing)?

20. Do I go to bed on time and get up on time?

21. Do I spend my free (spare) time wisely?

22. Do I defeat my lusts (pornography, lustful thinking, masturbation)?

23. Do I fight the fear of man in my heart and the dependency on people’s opinions?

24. Do I accept criticism towards myself well?

The Scripture memory text

The heavens declare the glory of God,
    and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
Day to day pours out speech,
    and night to night reveals knowledge.
There is no speech, nor are there words,
    whose voice is not heard.
Their voice goes out through all the earth,
    and their words to the end of the world.
In them he has set a tent for the sun,
    which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber,
    and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.
Its rising is from the end of the heavens,
    and its circuit to the end of them,
    and there is nothing hidden from its heat.

The law of the Lord is perfect,
    reviving the soul;
the testimony of the Lord is sure,
    making wise the simple;
the precepts of the Lord are right,
    rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is pure,
    enlightening the eyes;
the fear of the Lord is clean,
    enduring forever;
the rules of the Lord are true,
    and righteous altogether.
10 More to be desired are they than gold,
    even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey
    and drippings of the honeycomb.
11 Moreover, by them is your servant warned;
    in keeping them there is great reward.

12 Who can discern his errors?
    Declare me innocent from hidden faults.
13 Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins;
    let them not have dominion over me!
Then I shall be blameless,
    and innocent of great transgression.

14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
    be acceptable in your sight,
    O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.
